Autoimmune disease is a condition where the body's defense system attacks the body's own cells. There are many types of autoimmune diseases that affect different parts of the body. Their symptoms often overlap, making them difficult to diagnose. Autoimmune diseases are twice as common among childbearing women than men and frequently run in families.

More and more people are getting these diseases. Researchers think that environmental factors like increased stress from antibiotic resistant infections and exposure to chemicals, especially in our diet, may cause autoimmune diseases.

Processed foods and many medications cause inflammation in the gut (digestive tract). Affecting the protective lining of the gut allowing a small amount of undigested proteins into the blood stream. Setting off an immune reaction creating antibodies that attack body tissues.

Blood tests that search for inflammation and autoantibodies may be used to diagnosis these diseases. Conventional medicine relies on medications to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system.

Does Gut Health Affect Immune Function

The digestive tract or gut is more complicated than we previously realized. It has a significant impact on our overall health. Our gut's health benefits our immune system, contributes to heart health, and healthy brain function. We may sleep better and have a better mood. With a healthy gut, we are less likely to contract some forms of cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Hundreds of different types of bacteria live in the gut, with more bacterial cells in the body than human cells. These friendly bacteria (probiotics) work as an extra organ and play a huge role in maintaining health.

The fragile ecosystem of probiotics can be damaged by many things in modern life, like high stress levels, not getting enough sleep or exercise, eating processed foods with a lot of sugar, and taking antibiotics.

Celiac disease

People with celiac disease can’t eat foods containing gliadin, a protein like gluten, found in wheat and many grain products. When gliadin passes through the gut, the digestive enzyme triggers antibodies that attack the gut causing severe damage. A larger number of people have gluten sensitivity, not an autoimmune disease, but still causing gut inflammation.

When the lining of the intestines gets attacked by the immune system, we call that IBD. IBD causes diarrhea, rectal bleeding, urgent bowel motions, abdominal discomfort, fever, and weight loss.

There are two main types of IBD, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the digestive system, from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis affects only the lining of the large intestine and rectum.

Other Autoimmune Diseases

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a type of arthritis that happens when the immune system attacks the joints. This causes inflammation, swelling, and pain. If left untreated, this can permanently damage the joints.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (lupus) is a serious autoimmune disease that affects the whole body. Lupus patients develop immune antibodies that may attach to tissues all over the body. Commonly affecting brain, heart, joints, kidneys and skin.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that damages the protective coating around your nerve cells (myelin sheath). Damage to the myelin sheath can slow the transmission of messages between your brain and spinal cord, which can lead to symptoms like numbness, weakness, balance issues, and trouble walking.

Psoriasis is a condition where the malfunctioning immune system causes skin cells to multiply too quickly. The extra cells build up and form inflamed red patches, commonly with silver-white scales of plaque on the skin. Some people with psoriasis also get swelling, stiffness, and pain in their joints, called psoriatic arthritis.

Graves' Disease is a condition in which the immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to release too much thyroid hormone into the blood. This can cause symptoms like bulging eyes, weight loss, feeling nervous or irritated, a fast heart rate, weakness, and brittle hair.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is a condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, slowly destroying the cells that produce thyroid hormone. This can lead to a lack of thyroid hormone, which causes symptoms like fatigue, constipation, weight gain, depression, dry skin, and sensitivity to cold.

Why Don’t Autoimmune Specialists Recommend Autoimmune Diets or Probiotics?

Rheumatologists are limited to treating autoimmune diseases with anti-inflammatory and immune suppressing medications. None that I know of offer Functional Medicine support or recommend probiotics or Upper Cervical Chiropractic, yet.

Most doctors now recommend probiotics while taking antibiotics. But we are exposed to antibiotics in or food and water even if we never get a prescription. So, I do recommend proactively taking high quality probiotics. And these were the only ones that I felt good enough to earn the Get BetteRx label. Advanced Biotic Support

Autoimmune Experience

I spent too much of the first fifteen years of my life on antibiotics. With recurring upper respiratory infections from fall through spring. And the connective tissues around all my joints hurt bad enough for constant anti-inflammatory medication since the first grade

In tenth grade I was testing for advanced placement to medical school. Not too much stress there. But that stress was compounded by recurring migraines and IBD, high school is hard enough without knowing the shortest path to any bathroom. I was super skinny and could throw heat like a menopausal woman. That was my thyroid burning up from another undiagnosed autoimmune disease.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic

But then, I woke up one morning and couldn’t turn my head, everything from head to shoulder was in painful spasm. And that was the one thing that my medical family cautiously considered a chiropractic issue. I got lucky because the chiropractor had advanced training. No twisting or cracking, thank God.

I started feeling better and faster than I did in the past with any medication, not my first episode of head, neck, shoulder pain. But this doctor predicted I would feel better within a few treatments and that it would take much longer to rehabilitate my neck. So it wouldn’t keep happening at the worst time, again and again like it did up until then. I trusted him enough to see if that really meant anything to me.

And long story short, within the first year of treatment, for the first time in my life, I was pain and medication free. I became more active and had fewer injuries because my flexibility, balance and coordination improved dramatically. No more migraines or upper respiratory infections, I stopped getting hot flashes and my IBD calmed down dramatically. I had what most teenagers take for granted, I had my health.

Chemical Dependency

Unlike any other doctor, the chiropractor examined and measured my postural Alignment, Balance, and Coordination. And by treating that, instead of just managing pain, all my lifelong balance and coordination issues started to heal properly.

None of the surgeries or medications, none of the physical or psychological therapy ever gave me the lasting relief that I found with someone my medical family didn’t even consider a real doctor.

But it took me a whole year to detox from years of daily medication. Some of the damage, from those medications, may never completely heal. But now I work and play as hard as I want to every day, migraine and IBD free and while I still have arthritis, I haven’t needed even aspirin in almost 40 years.

Most Doctors Agree

Recently the American College of Physicians, a distinguished group of over one hundred thousand medical doctors and healthcare providers, published formal recommendations to avoid pain management and surgery whenever possible. Instead, they suggest non-invasive therapies if the patient responds to those treatments.

And the world-famous Cleveland Clinic released an extensive two-year study tracking thousands of patients who got better Quality of Life results with functional medicine than just conventional medical care alone.

Most doctors know that appropriate diet, exercise and stress management is the best long-term medicine for any condition. But they’re expected to write a prescription in a few minutes. Even though any search engine could do that in less than a second. But neither of those options are good medicine.

Restore Balance for Lasting Relief without Drugs or Surgery

After I was properly examined and treated for Alignment, Balance, and Coordination. With specific, no twist or crack, upper cervical chiropractic to reduce the physical stress, throwing my posture out of balance and coordination... My neck started moving and improving better than previous injuries treated by bracing, PT, and medication. Most of the lifelong pain in all my weight bearing joints went away too. And once I saw how out of balance I was I could understand how that postural misalignment was a constant strain on everything else. I didn’t get upper respiratory infections anymore so I stopped needing antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. My gut finally had a chance to get better.

So now, as long as I stick to my daily stretches and anti-inflammatory diet, and some daily supplements, I have little if any arthritis, digestive, immune or sleep issues. Like I used to, under constant medical supervision.

Not Intended As Medical Advice

Even with several new injuries that forced me to find more amazing drug free, non-invasive therapies... Not only do I save time and money by proactively staying healthy, but I don’t miss out on irreplaceable experiences with friends and family. Like I used to when I relied on emergency medical care and constant medication to manage my health.
