Rest and ice may be necessary. If you choose to ice, put ice directly on skin, no cloth, for no more than 15 minutes at a time. Less than 15 minutes if you have a circulation problem. If icing provides relief and is well tolerated without skin damage, repeat hourly for up to 3 days.

For almost a year, it felt like I had a knife in my back. It didn’t matter what activity or time, 24/7/365. I’d always shift positions, trying to find some relief. But no amount of physical therapy could touch it and I knew pain management would be toxic and damage my shoulder even worse. For the first time in decades I considered orthopedic surgery, even though the last one left me with permanent nerve damage.
But then, I spent a weekend at my best student’s clinic in Canada. I though over a thousand doctors but he was one of the few that I could trust with a real challenge. He did a whole new exam and evaluation, worked on my neck and shoulder half a dozen times the first day and no relief. I was getting discouraged. Then again on the second day and there was some temporary relief, finally. Then on the third day the spasm broke and after a year of torture, I was pain free again.
